Get an insight into baseball’s unsung heroes with “Disguised Combat, Long Haul, No Steroids: Ed. I” painting exhibition to open at The Record Ranch Gallery inside Cactus Music, 2110 Portsmouth, on April 18th. All works were created in-between Will’s busy touring and recording schedule with his bands Centro-Matic and South San Gabriel.

“We at Cactus have long been fans of Will’s recorded work and it is very exciting to host an exhibit of Will’s paintings as our first musician-as-artist show.” says Quinn Bishop, managing partner of Cactus Music and The Record Ranch Gallery. “At the record store, we routinely champion the lesser known people that have made tremendous contributions to music. This philosophy applies so well to America’s favorite pastime as seen in Will’s show. We are pleased to include this opening as part of our Record Store Day schedule of events.”

The exhibition of paintings features Negro League giants Satchel Paige and Cool Papa Bell, Alta Weiss who was the first female professional player, innovative managers Branch Rickey and John McGraw, house-hold names such as Hank Aaron Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and Jackie Robinson plus other figures who made remarkable contributions to their sport and have unique stories. These works have not been exhibited prior to this show.

“I keep the medium simple: just acrylic paint on old floor scraps, MDF board, glass or whatever might be hanging around my house or storage room. I'm not trained at this, and I wouldn't call these pieces high art necessarily, but I at least try to celebrate the importance and uniqueness of these pioneers, unsung heroes and American curiosities. I try to focus on the transmission of history through simple tribute. It's a way of paying respect, a way getting to know the game I love even better.” - Will Johnson.

A reception with the musician and painter, which is open to the public, will be held from 7 – 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th. The evening also will include a special live musical performance by Will Johnson who will be previewing compositions from his upcoming album. The reception will close Cactus Music’s Record Store Day festivities. Refreshments will be provided by The St. Arnold Brewing Company.

The exhibition is free and runs through May, 2009.

About Will Johnson (in his own words)
My name is Will. I drive a small pickup, am not presently on any medication, write songs, and play in two bands with some friends that I love a lot. I’ve worked jobs on a farm, in maintenance and janitorial work, in comic book distribution, in a record store, in restaurants, teaching, delivering cars, transporting equipment, renting out tuxedos, making sandwiches, and cleaning up radioactive and mercury-contaminated waste. I love baseball. I have always loved baseball.

"The Arc and the Cusp" by South San Gabriel is NPR's Song of the Day!

South San Gabriel is widely considered a side project of the roots-rock band Centro-Matic - even its members seem to think so. But, unlike many side projects, South San Gabriel features every member of the group that spawned it, as well as two additional players. For the most part, what separates the two bands is the creative breathing room inherent to side projects.

While Centro-Matic's members craft superb rock records, not much has changed for their sound in the past 10 years, while South San Gabriel evolves constantly. The two bands each record half of the new split-release Dual Hawks, and if South San Gabriel's "The Arc and the Cusp" had been produced with only singer Will Johnson's vocal and guitar, it could have easily wound up on the Centro-Matic side. Fortunately, though, it's produced with a stunning mix of live and synthesized orchestration, backwards tape loops and drum machines. It's a sonic feast that takes multiple listens to digest; along the way, it provides a compelling blueprint that Centro-Matic ought to consider following.

Will Johnson has been touring with his indie rock band Centro-matic for a long time -- long enough that he has summer tour scheduling pretty much dialed in.

After his booking agent identifies the American cities Centro-matic will be hitting with their unique brand of alt-country tinged lo-fi pop, Johnson gets on the computer.

"I immediately hop over to MLB.com and start looking at the schedules to see who's in town and what games I can go to," Johnson says. "On nights off, I'll definitely try to get to the closest park, and it doesn't matter if it's A-ball or 'The Show.' I'm just happy to get to a game. Without a doubt, it's complete therapy for me and a real treat."

Over the last twelve years, our band has been mighty lucky to chug along in as natural way as we could have hoped. We're not particularly well known on a lot of levels, but we also haven't experienced the slippery slope resulting from premature or undeserving gains. No one ever gave us nice hotel rooms before we felt like we deserved them, and the red wine and baby carrots and various backstage luxuries didn't exactly show up too soon. actually, they still don't show up most times. But I guess we've managed to do this thing in workman-like fashion. We march and roll and fly and sail on in our own sovereign, hands-on kind of way, and continue to have a real good time doing it, growing and learning as any family might together.

Our fans have taken good care of us over all those years and we've made a phenomenal amount of friends over many, many miles. Somehow things just get a little better with every passing year, too. It feels good to be able to say that. I guess perseverance, continued inspiration and love for one another can lead to that.

We're about to release our 13th and 14th records next. Both of our bands, Centro-matic and South San Gabriel are included. The collection is called Dual Hawks. The idea of making it a double split release stemmed from the want to do something unusual but fan-friendly. In addition to that, we are assembling a limited special edition release, complete with a beautiful 30-page book full to the neck with the fruit of Matt Pence's, Julie Miller's and Mark Ray's awe-inspiring talents. Matt's phenomenal photography continues to exist as the perfect, rightful document of our bands' life. His body of work holds the most fitting timeline of images I could ever hope to have represent this chapter of our lives together. Julie is a new friend of ours, a kind and devoted fan for some time now. After finally seeing some of her stunning work last year, we instantly knew that we wanted her involved with this release. She's been very generous to contribute this endeavor. With the mix of Matt and Julie's efforts, combined with our friend, Mark Ray's always fitting and beautiful design and art direction, we felt like we had the right mix for this special edition release.

And so here we are. It's an involved batch of music. There's a good bit to sift through, and it's against the grain at points. It begs a chunk of patience and time from its listener. But as far as I'm concerned, that's the point of independent art. It's not always convenient. It's not always tidy and easy to categorize. That's the kind of liberty we get to enjoy as a creative group of people fully in control of our own destiny. This is our ship. Why not paint it and sail it the way we want? Most importantly we feel like it's the kind of release that's specially designed for our friends and fans that have soldiered on with us over the years. so, to the mechanics of our spiritual engine, the painters and foundation supporters of our cottage industry, the sober drivers of our emotional fuel truck, and the night owls and guards of our sentimental forest, maybe see ya' down the road!

Will Johnson art auction to benefit Drew Glackin Memorial Fund

Thanks to the kind generosity of a fan and friend in Buffalo. We were able to donate $1000 to Drew's Memorial Fund. THANK YOU!!!

On January 5th, we lost a very good friend in Drew Glackin. Drew passed away due to an overactive thyroid condition that lead to severe heart damage. Like so many musicians, he had no health insurance, and funeral costs still have yet to be covered.

There are several shows taking place between New York and Texas to help cover expenses, and we here in Centro-matic-land are hoping to do our part. We will be holding an auction of a ten painting set done by Will Johnson with all money going to Drew's family.

The set is titled "Canned/Shitcanned - American Beers From Past and Present"

These paintings are acrylic on five-ply wood flooring scraps fresh out of Will's garage, measuring anywhere from 3-1/4" to 4" in width and 7-1/2" to 9-1/2" in length. They come complete with hooks for hanging, and each beer's name and city of origin noted on the back of the paintings. All are signed and dated by Will in finest, high grade, black Sharpie.

Happy 2008. Hope this finds you in firm control of all your resolutions. Sorry it's been a while since I've written. Was busy trying to get my name cleared from the Mitchell Report and, y'know, working out. Danbom just shot me up with some, umm, B12. At least my lawyer advised me to say it was B12, so I think I'm ready to get down to full transmission here.

We been toilin and schemin' in our little world over the last little while, and I think it's gonna be a fun one this year. I'm proud to announce that this spring we will celebrate the release of our first double album, "Dual Hawks". It will not only be a double, but a split double that includes a Centro-matic side and a South San Gabriel side. It will come to you courtesy of Misra here in the US, and Cooking Vinyl and Houston Party Records in Europe. We are keeping costs as low as possible at many turns to ensure that it comes to you at a very fan-friendly price. Lastly, it is with heavy hearts that we say farewell to our good friend Drew Glackin. Drew passed away peacefully last Saturday due to an overactive thyroid condition that led to fatal heart damage. He was a longtime and devoted friend of ours from our earliest days of touring, and was a musician of the highest regard that had a resounding effect on all those that were lucky enough to know him. His work with The Silos, and the many contributions he made to so many other projects, releases and countless performances will live on with us. His kindness and undying enthusiasm were contagious and have meant a great deal to our band over the years. We send a heartfelt and humble salute in memory of him. We will miss you terribly, Drew.

Carter Albrecht was our friend. He made our lives richer whenever we were lucky enough to be in his presence. He also inspired us with his musical brilliance and his personal integrity. We will miss him dearly. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.

These photos were taken at the Echo Lab, where Carter worked on commercial and film music with me (Matt). He composed music there, with Will Johnson, Robert Gomez and, most especially, Danny Balis. It was a real joy to see the Danny and Carter tag team, musically and personally. I will miss it very much, and I want to send a personal consolation to Danny, who I know is wounded deeply from this event.

Will will be drumming for legendary Texas recluse, Jandek, on Saturday July 21st at Fort Worth's Rose Marine Theater. The show is scheduled to start at 7:30, and the lineup includes Ralph White on fiddle and banjo, Susan Alcorn on pedal steel, and Baptist General, Ryan Williams on bass guitar. This performance will be filmed by Lee Daniel, who has worked on several Richard Linklater films, the Townes Van Zandt documentary "Be Here To Love Me", and the Roky Erickson documentary "You're Gonna Miss Me". Trek and Shift and Late Night Gurrlz Paying For College in Dirty Ways:
Thanks to any and all that stopped down on this recent midwestern solo run with my friend and fellow Undertow Orchestra chum, David Bazan. We kicked it (slow and) low overhead with a Subaru, an amp and two guitars, gorging ourselves on This American Life and discussions of music, getting the best out of a reasonably priced Zinfandel, and of course, the devil. Or at least the idea of the devil. Anyway, to that dude that was truckin' the Girls Gone Wild bus through downtown Madison: What graphics, holmes! Thanks for not parking it in front of our show.

There's recently been a change within a band that is family to us, and I'd like to give humble salute. After five and a half years of making some truly astounding music and memories together, The Drive-By Truckers and Jason Isbell have chosen to go their separate ways. We wish them both our heartfelt best on these new paths they're taking, and look forward to all the great music that will certainly come from each of them as the days do roll on.

Operation Motorcide EP:
If you haven't snagged it already via import mail order, iTunes has stated that they will have the Operation Motorcide EP available within the coming weeks. We also plan to have a limited number of import copies on hand for the May 12th Austin show. For now, it is streaming wildly at our myspace page.

WINTER'S SPLINTER
Man, it's been a post-holiday run of useless and exhausting Bonds-ian contract speculation, ice storms, and spoonfuls of Hydroxy Cut when no one's lookin'. I got chromium picolinate on the brain, but really, who doesn't? Either way, hope youns are well. Thanks to all the friends in Spain and Portugal that stopped down for the recent run of solo shows with my gentlemanly Texas friends, Micah P. Hinson and Nick Phelps. We had a real good time rolling along, hanging with our driver, Titi, playing some songs and wolfing bocadillos. We were full blown pottymouthed for twelve days straight.

NEW EP
Houston Party Records will release Centro-matic's Operation Motorcide EP this spring. Far as I know, it'll be available via iTunes and some of those other downloadable cyber avenues as well. BACK TO THE WOODS
South San Gabriel embarks on its next recording experience in just a few days. We'll hole up traditional-like in the confines of Argyle, Texas' Echo Lab until early March. We'll have all Centro-matic folks, Matt Stoessel, Bryan Vandivier and Robert Gomez onhand to make this stark and dark recording dream real.

SHOWS
No confirmations at the moment due to recording, though I will trek the midwest solo with David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) in April, and Centro-matic will return to Spain and possibly other parts of Europe come late Spring. We're working on fitting a few Texas shows in there as well, hopefully prior to the baseball Rangers being mathematically eliminated from playoff qualification. Our friend, Wendy Musick, from Georgia greats, Southern Bitch recently had to have surgery to remove a pancreatic tumor. Due to the sad state of our country's healthcare system, and with no health insurance to speak of, no surgeons that she sought in Atlanta would consider performing the operation. She finally had a successful surgery earlier this month in Athens and is recovering nicely, but help is still certainly needed. Will Johnson to appear in indie film

Chicago-based indie film company, Dowstate Productions recently finished shooting its second feature film "Salt Creek County." The film is due to be completed in spring of 2007. "Salt Creek County" is a mythical dark comedy about a man named Raymond Colby, who after years is released from the local mental home. Raymond claims he was picked up and carried away by a gaint bird years prior. Upon Raymond's return back to his small town he pleas to the colorful locals to follow him to the forbidden other side of Salt Creek County to attempt to show the evidence that his story did happen. Salt Creek County is a story about going beyond our mental boundaries and giving magic and innocence a chance again.

The cast is reprised by many of the talents displayed in Downstate Productions first award winning feature film "TroubadourS." Newcomers include L.A. based actor Tahmus Rounds (Copey Cat, ER, Deadwood). Chris Brown (Blue Man Group), also joining the cast acclaimed Texas based singer songwriter Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel). Will Johnson plays the part of Clive Colby. Clive is Raymond Colby's younger brother and maybe the only person in Salt Creek County to ever really belive Raymond's tall tale about a giant bird picking him up and carrying him away. Clive is a quiet soul who works at the local diner, Clive also has a friend named Dugan that only he can see, Clive and Dugan are the best of friends.

Got a ticket from a New York state trooper on the way into the city which threw a damper on and otherwise nice Saturday afternoon. He had a smirk and a built-in disappointed dad look that I probably don't have to explain. No 'stache, but an uptight gait. We are not dangerous. We are just scruffy and like to ride free. Nevertheless the whole NYC experience was yet again first rate. Great to see all the friends from up that way, and the Mercury crowd was plentiful and kind. Philadelphia's very excellent Dr. Dog played on the bill, and their latest offering is worth checking out. Got our lazy on for Sunday afternoon, enjoying some Pojmanian bomb-lettes and coffee, eventually rolling out slowly to Philly with our friend, Darci. Khyber crowd was one of the most raucous and enjoyable of the tour thus far (thanks much for that kindness), and Omaha's Neva Dinova joined the Generals and us for the whole thing. Wound the night down with some laughs, a PBR and quiet concerns about Cardinals pitching.

They say Ithaca is gorges, and that's the damn gospel. Marty yet again assembled a breakfast that brought tears of joy to our eyes, and we took advantage of the short routing and spent the morning listening to records, reading and embracing general laziness. Was only a couple of hours to Ithaca, so we took the scenic route along one of the Finger Lakes only to happen upon a waterfall vista that I'm still spun up on. There was ice draped down over the rocks for many stories, and vast amounts of water rushing down for what seemed to be about a quarter of a mile drop into a cloud of mist below. There was still snow everywhere which made it all that more otherworldly. I think Pence got some quality shots that will thankfully speak for themselves so I can shut up about it. Got to town and found we were up against Jon Stewart. Kind of a bummer, as we woulda dug seein' his show. Put him on the list but he didn't make it. Full blown campus dining experience thanks to Beth and Cornell, and it was the most well assembled and complex campus cafeteria scene I ever did stumble upon to. The bread and pastry area is titled "Dough my Gosh" or somesuch and there's an entire wall of cereal bins. At any rate, show went well and we had good times hanging with the Cornell-ians in the cold. Our friend Jeff was kind enough to lay in a load of PBR for us in the bed his truck just outside the door (thank you, kind Jeff). We got busted shuttling it around the back area, but you know, we didn't know. Acting nineteen's fun, even when you're in your thirties.

We're in good hands with our friends Macklin, Marty and some two foot snowdrifts, enjoying the late winter sun and the beauty offered by these latitudes. Sunny and cold's been the order since D.C., and as up against it as we felt for that Boston show (Lou Barlow next door, the Finn Brothers somewhere in town, the Frames somewhere else, Wednesday night, big snow, God knows what else.), we cut into the good times with that crowd. We're thankful for the showing, and it felt good to share the bill with our pals from Trucker tourdom, Runner and the Thermodynamics. Got to Buffalo for another snowdrift load-in and recommended cheesesteaks from Donny and Eric. The Generals sounded great as ever, and the their dumptruck-load of right on-ness was felt in western New York. Middle act's fascinating and grossly pretentious delay in changeover sent me to the sidewalk for phone calls and smokes. In the wake of such events we had a suspiciously efficient changeover and gave our best to our patient and kind Western New York/Southern Ontario friends.

The temperate dream is over and the camp's scrambling in the bottoms of suitcases for longjohns, parkas and related attire. Inevitable, I guess. Weather changed right around Savannah, and I got a feelin' it's not looking back. Durham on a Monday looked like anyone's guess on paper, and we were pleased to find that folks were willing to battle the cold and stop on down. Omaha's Beep Beep joined the Generals and us for a one off, and Handsome Anders Parker jumped up on guitar for "To Unleash the Horses Now". Sound was unwieldy, but spirit was present. Duke's in a comfortable lead as far as tour graffiti rankings go, as it's some of the most impressive we've seen thus far. Kant? Wordsworth? Seriously, we ain't at Love's no more, Maudine.

Some numbers taken from the van out front of the club last night while standing guard, sipping off a Bud tallboy from the bullet-proof liquor store 'cross the street: twenty-one minutes, three phone calls back to Texas, and four hand to hand "transactions" from uh, businessmen rummaging through their big puffy coats. Finally, a place for my per diems! Or at least to make a deal for a puffy coat. It was about thirteen degrees and windy, and was anyone's guess as to how the whole thing'd turn out, but folks showed and we had a pretty big time despite the anti-rock forces that scowled on us through the night (upstairs load in, a P.A. that smelled and sounded like it'd taken a ride on a dung rollercoaster, and a couple of inexcusable staff folk). Despite these things, it was superb to see Nan, the promoter again, as we're big fans of hers (thank you, Nan). Thanks much to Revival for playing, and all the Washingtown friends for coming on down and hanging out with us. And they got baseball again. I know they're keeping with the old Senators tradition as best they can, but it's a little untimely and creepy that the D.C. team's got a big, fat "W" as the cap logo. Untimely and creepy bein' as their most notorious resident, Dubya himself once sold the Rangers (the expansion team formed at the expense of the original Sen's) off. Took that to the Red Roof north of town and slept on it for a while.

Was great to see Bev and all the WMNF crew again. They graciously brought enough homecooked food to fill Skynrd and crew, and gave us a tour of their new facilities that were just completed. On air performance was rickety but serviceable much like a Jason Marquis outing. Stole a nap in the van later at the New World in order to get my head right for show, and the humidity was fantastic and monster-ish. Ybor City has become quite the municipal nightlife playground with its cigar stores, Starbucks, and dance clubs, and it's always fun to roam and dodge all the folks in white pants, rayon shirts and ready-for-the-weekend cazzzzh sandals. Mandals? Show was lots of fun, and New Roman Times were smokin' in front of the home staters. Was good to be with them again and hang with all the FL friends. Very porch-like atmosphere here, and I think we turned in a decent one for a very superb crowd. Managed to get "Huge in Every City" in at the end of the show, and I recall borrowing someone's beer somwhere in there. Thanks for that. Loaded out happily in the mist and light rain, only to wind up at a Lakeland Waffle House with the NRT's scowling at me eggs and giggling at dumb shit, making noises. Rain was pouring by then. Got back to Orlando by morning light thanks to Shane. Loaded things back into the NRT house and landed sleepily and soundly. Uly was not spastic for once.

Uneasy and not sure-handed today for lack of sleep. WMNF radio thing in a little while and nervous about it some. Rain got to us pretty good yesterday, and we sprinted through parking lots in puddles clad in water-welcoming shoes and coats. Gator fan could smell my Volunteer-sympathetic blood at Bread Company and stared at me with suspicious eyes. Steve Miller was on the radio again and it was no accident. No accident, man. Wood screw in front right is holding well though I've got my eye on it every day. Won't pull it out as it might ruin the good times and what good are ya' if your good times are ruined by your own hand? Got to our friends' Josie and Dan's in Winter Park in time for reunitin', coffee, Stroopwafels and an inevitable nap. Their Jack Russell terrier, Uly is a good but spastic friend in times of nap. His balls are gone. Pho 88 for dinner as Orlando tradition holds, and you should go if you go. Show at Will's was real good times but Jason has to leave us tomorrow for his Alabama homeland. To say that we'll miss him just sounds flimsy. Back to Josie and Dan's for a couple of beers, a half-written song on a bunk bed, still spastic Uly, and conversation. 7am before I know it and merely hours before departure. Uneasy and not sure-handed now. WMNF radio thing in a little while and nervous about it some.

It's a straight shot to Gainesville from Atlanta, and we made sweet time through the pines and peanut stands and Orlando Vacation Bureau outlets of southern Georgia and north Florida. South of Macon, the landscape sprawls out pretty nicely, the traffic dies and the highway moves fast. Once you get to Florida, they give you three lanes to work with on each side, and it can become something of a speedway what with all the winterbirds and Disneyheads. I've enjoyed some good drives in this corridor over the last couple of years, watching sunsets flicker through the pines while listening to local radio glubs fumble their way through the call of Valdosta High baseball games. Got to Common Grounds, checked and strolled around to a couple of restaurants until we finally got served. The venue's moved since I was last here a couple years ago, and has improved its whole situation nicely. The staff was great and the show went pretty well, but maybe some of the crowd had spring training on their minds? Loaded out and found our way to one of those Ramadas that our grandfolks might've stayed in back in the day - all separated buildings, one story, with lodge-like beams and decor in the rooms. The woman at the desk would eventually suspect that I stole a remote. I did not. Fell asleep and dreamt of spring training.

Keeping track of the distinctions between Centro-matic and South San Gabriel could be a full-time effort, if one were so inclined. Based in Denton, Texas, Centro-matic once titled an album South San Gabriel Songs/Music, only to give a splinter faction of the participating musicians—meaning Centro-matic and more friends—the name South San Gabriel and release that album in Europe under the new band name. South San Gabriel includes the four core members of Centro-matic, plus additional members, but we’ll get to that shortly. You might be inclined to say that Centro-matic material tends to be more rockin’, with SSG its mellow, literary counterpart, and Will Johnson’s solo material as…well…usually (how shall I put this?) skinny-dipping in the abyss—but it would be a gross oversimplification. Each of these projects shares all of the aforementioned respective qualities and more. What is distinctive about the release of Dual Hawks is that we get the chance to hear side-by-side the various ways in which Centro-matic and South San Gabriel complement and play off of each other—sort of the full-length equivalent of a split single.

Named for a model of an Italian accordion, Centro-matic began as little more than a home-recording outlet for Will Johnson’s unstoppable muse. Redo the Stacks (1997) was primarily the work of Johnson, with soon-to-be Centro-matic members Scott Danbom on violin and Matt Pence in the recording engineer’s seat. The band soon grew to become a more collaborative effort, with Danbom (“the pride of Ponca City, Oklahoma”) on keyboards, bass, and vocals, as well as the occasional violin, Pence on drums and production/engineering duties, and Mark Hedman on bass and guitar.

The head wound may have been a setback (as the name of Johnson’s music-publishing company implies), but it was by no means the expiration of Will Johnson’s songwriting prowess. Far from it. Over the past decade, we have been treated to—I hope I get the count right (or that somebody who hasn’t been drinking the tequila Will brought over fact-checks this thing)—nine Centro-matic albums, four EPs, five singles, two South San Gabriel albums, two Johnson solo efforts (as well as a tour-only release)—every one a Maserati. Some bands focus on quality; others on quantity. With Dual Hawks, the respective bands prove once again that they are one of the rare breeds who can do both. Catchy hooks, wiry guitars, harmonies and handclaps, splendid string and horn arrangements, and songs so well written and produced they will make indie-rockers of lesser mettle go home and cry.

I had the good fortune of spending some time on the road with these folks a few years back, and let me tell ya, in this business we call “show,” you meet some characters (not all of whom you’d feel comfortable having over for a barbecue). What struck me about Centro-matic and Co. was not simply that they are extremely talented musicians, producers, and arrangers, or that they are road-seasoned to the point of seeming incapable of performing a stale, by-the-numbers show, or that they consistently (and as frequently as their label will permit) put out stunning and at times breathtaking recordings, or that they are among the finest people I’ve been given the opportunity to know—but that they are all the encapsulation of of these things and more. Every day. Centro-matic and South San Gabriel are, in a word, exceptional (in all senses of the term). I would tell you more, but I don’t want to ruin the thrill you will get when you put Dual Hawks on for the first time. And I can guarantee you, it won’t be the last.

Nuts and bolts, where and when was the album recorded, and by whom?
Will Johnson: “We did the bulk of the Centro-matic side over the course of a week back in July 2006, most of which was written right there on the spot. We came back for some overdubs and such a few months later. The South San Gabriel side was recorded during February of 2007. All of the recordings were done at The Echo Lab in Argyle, Texas, by Matt Pence.”

Remind me again, who is comprising South San Gabriel these days?
WJ: “It sometimes varies for the live version, but for this record we got a bunch of folks involved. There’s the four of us from Centro-matic, along with Matt Stoessel (pedal steel), Bryan VanDivier (bass guitar, baritone guitar, percussion), Robert Gomez (arrangements), Jeffrey Barnes (clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, flute, throat singing), Buffi Jacobs (cello), Tamara Cauble (viola, violin), David Pierce (trombone), and James Driscoll (upright bass). “

Any guests on the project that I should note?
WJ: “All of ’em, homeslice!”

Was Dual Hawks always conceived as a double album? Was it an excuse to get more songs out at once?
WJ: “Originally, our last record (Fort Recovery) was supposed to be a double album. In the end, we decided not to do it that way, but I think there was still a carried-over attraction to eventually doing one. As time went with all these recordings, I think we all came to agree that it was a very solid look at what each of our musical entities do. They sit pretty well together. I think it was originally Mark’s suggestion to do the split double album, and we all agreed it was time to shake things up a bit, put out a bold release and take a chance. Something real fan-friendly, and at the same time against the grain.”

Where do the songs come from? Do they have a unifying thread?
WJ: “The approaches to each side were pretty different. I worked on the South San Gabriel songs for a number of months before we all got together, constantly picking at them, changing things. It’s far more preconceived, carefully orchestrated and labored over. The Centro-matic session was more about writing and recording right there in the moment. More than half of the Centro-matic side was written in the studio, and those songs were recorded within hours of being written. Lots of spontaneity, rawness, and fun in that approach.”

Did you have “indie-rock ELO” on the brain at any point in the process?
WJ: “Yeah, more so I think during the South San Gabriel recordings.”

Other thoughts about the project worth noting?
“We kept a loaded BB gun on the back porch at all times during the South San Gabriel sessions. We hung targets in the form of cans and photos of politicians, sports stars, and general turds and/or douchebags that we just don’t dig hanging from a tree in the distance. Anytime anyone needed to blow off some steam, they’d just pick up the BB gun and start shooting at stuff. Poor man’s therapy session, I guess.”

I made a slideshow of the Drive by Truckers shows we played in Athens, recently. The music is "Goddamn Lonely Love", by the Drive by Truckers, from their album "the Dirty South." Thanks to them for being good friends to us. I can't think of a band that goes to greater lengths to support good music, and a healthy local scene. They've certainly gone well out of their way to help us.

Routing was good today. Only eighty miles or so to Atlanta, so relaxing, visiting and large quantities of breakfast food were the order of the afternoon. Patterson and Rebecca graciously invited us and some friends over for coffee, breakfast burritos, sausage, beans and potatoes, and we decided to make a day of it and thrice up to some high impact lounging. Their friend, master painter and illustrator, Byron Wilkes was in from Alabama, and Jen, Pistol, Mary Catherine, Zach and much of the Athens family came over for a good while. Days like this on tour could be seen as a band's best friend and a booking agent's surest form of job security. We blazed through some nine or ten pots of coffee, observed the science vs. art nature of the Broad Street road construction, and enjoyed the company and laughs. Farewells were bid, and Jason got us to Atlanta in good time as the skies clouded and nighttime arrived. Had some dinner courtesy of the EARL (superb place to eat should you find yourself in east Atlanta), and caught up with some friends. We had a great time playing, and I recall doing The Toaster to the best of my ability at show's end. Thank you, Scott Munn for corralling the ever-so-necessary beverages that fueled my juvenile, aerobicizin' actions.

We took some lesser known roads amongst the pecan sellers, sword handlers and peach pushers of southwestern Georgia. And maybe it's just the Chik-Fil-A talkin', but I'm always up for the emotional elixir of another Athens/Tasty World visit. We stumbled upon Steve Miller three times in an hour on the radio (no accident), and the weather was spring-like. Macon had traffic as usual on 75, and the word had come down the line not to eat before the show, as Jen and Shayne were assembling a big gumbo dinner for us with some banana pudding for dessert. We arrived, checked, quality controlled the PBR of the establishment, and if ever I was drunk on gumbo and banana pudding I sure was that night. Thank you, Jen. Thank you, Shayne. Our friends, Lake City opened the show in marvelous and stately fashion. Matt/Pistol Stoessel (SSG) is the principal songwriter and singer, and he casts a beautifully Zevon-ian mood over the room. Check them out if you get the chance. Was a real fun night for the Generals and us. The crowd was superb and I feel like both of us turned in pretty good performances out of the whole thing. Upon shutting the place down, I made my way back to Patterson and Rebecca's for a last beer and an introduction to Ava Ruth, their newborn daughter. She'd just completed her fifteenth day in this world. I held her for a few minutes as she dozed peacefully, then found my way to bed completely content with this February Tuesday.

All the celebration and amplifiers and beer and jokes and conversation from the weekend had whittled themselves down to this quietness, this next 827 miles. Back to just the four of us, the hum of the road running beneath. The winter sun was setting already, and I think there was an overall sense of satisfaction coursing throughout the van. I've noticed this kind of quiet at the end of tours before, and it's one of the best sensations one could ask for in the wake of such efforts.

Athens, Day Three

It's Weaver D's day. Thirty five minutes and one chicken and gravy special later, the magic had kicked in and I had fallen madly in love with the idea of a two-hour nap-

I grabbed my slippers and stole an abbreviated version of the nap I so desired and we rolled back to the club to check in and get ready for the last night. I fetched some dinner and caught up with the Summer Hymns friends over a few PBRs, and minutes later found myself intertwined in Southern Bitch's rock greatness. Scotty and I played with them a couple years back at Smith's in Atlanta, and as much as I dug 'em then, I enjoyed tonight's set even more. [We] shuffled around for a few minutes, tuned up and settled in for one last show. It was a spirited and loud one, and I think our cause was transmitted sufficiently.

En Route And Arriving in Athens

We sped eastward underneath sunshine on 20, enjoyed a Jimmy Lewis record, and dodged all the holes and bumps and construction that sits between Birmingham and the Georgia state line. Is that project eternal? It was not without a predictable dose of Atlanta congestion that we finally made it to the nurturing bosom of Athens. Kudzu's hibernating for winter, but the hills are still just as beautiful to me.

We loaded in quickly, celebrated our reunion with the Truckers, soundchecked and scattered in various directions in search of sustenance. Upon return, and after sitting on a Jackson Street bench giving my liver a gentle coaxing about what the weekend had in store, I grabbed a PBR and proceeded to soak up all of Thursday opener Garbage Island's majesty.

Denton to Tuscaloosa, AL

It was a 16-hour run today, up to Denton from Austin, then across I-20 to this Motel 6; no Priceline luxuries tonight, just a browbeating from a wiry night clerk, some tiny soaps that turn your skin to chalk and some undersized towels.

This time tomorrow we'll be starting a three-night campout with our friends the Drive-By Truckers at the 40-Watt. Once we get there, it's genius routing. Three nights with a band we love, at a club we love, in a town that I've never been too tightlipped about my crush on. I had a dream about Weaver D's two nights ago, and I suppose there's a reason for that. This room smells a little like old fish and shoes, and that night clerk's attitude could stand a recalibration, but those things can't come close to killing the good feelings I'm about to go to sleep on.

Heart break en-route to Phoenix, as we watch our beloved Dallas Mavericks get eliminated from the NBA playoffs by the Sacramento Kings 119-118. I am still a bit shaken up about it. I guess I need to stop watching once the playoffs and defense begin to be played. Some of us recovered a bit when Calgary fanned the flames of our false hopes, with the Redwings beating them 5-2.

Phoenix/Marquee Theater w/ Ben Kweller, Death Cab for Cutie

1021 miles- who knew Phoenix was so far away? I guess we did. We also knew that the last ever Little Grizzly show at Rubber Gloves in Denton the following night. It was not possible to miss our friends swansong, so as soon as the show was finished we began our preparations to drive overnight back to Denton. The Grizz went out in a majestic blaze of glory, and it was well worth the sleep deprivation it cost us to make it back in time. The folks in Tempe were wonderfully kind to us. We haven't spent nearly enough time there to deserve the reception we received, so thanks for listening and sharing such encouraging words. We will try to make it back real soon, friends. This was way too short a run.

Speaking of the House of Bourbon (please note the use of the heavy-handed segue way), I allowed myself to be over-served by tender cousin Jim Beam. I can't remember if I did the caterpillar or any other such dance moves, but I definitely remember pogo-ing on the balcony while singing along to Death Cab and BK. If my unbridled enthusiasm for our tourmates distracted anyone from their own attempts to enjoy the evening's proceedings, then I do apologize. Can't take me anywhere.
I sure had fun, though.

A bit of advice for aspiring stagehands- do not plug the lights and the PA into the same circuit-thingy. (I hope I am not being too technical here.) Bad things will happen. Rock shows will not happen. Hundreds of fans waiting for hours in the rain did unfortunately happen. I must say that if the same thing had occurred at a nu-rapmetal show, the crowd would not have been anywhere near as gracious in their drenched defeat. It sucked not being able to play after driving down to H-town, but we salvaged the evening by drinking margaritas and Mexican beer with Scott's folks. (They always make a Houston roadtrip worthwhile, and Steve Danbom knows more about rock than all of us put together: http://www.danbomgeophysics.com/.)
